Word Counter

What this does

The Word Counter analyses your text in real time and breaks it down into seven useful metrics. As you type or paste, it updates instantly — no submit button, no wait.

Use it when you're writing an essay with a strict word count, drafting a tweet under 280 characters, polishing an article for SEO, preparing a speech with a target run-time, or checking that a meta description fits inside Google's display window. Everything runs in your browser; your text is never uploaded or stored.

How to use it

1. Type directly into the box, or paste text from anywhere (Cmd/Ctrl + V).
2. Watch the seven stats update on every keystroke.
3. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute (average adult silent reading); speaking time assumes 130 wpm (average podcast pace).
4. Click Copy to copy your text back to the clipboard, or Clear to start over.

How we count

• Characters — every character including spaces and line breaks.
• No spaces — characters with all whitespace removed.
• Words — runs of non-whitespace separated by any whitespace.
• Sentences — runs ending in ., ! or ? (multiple in a row count once).
• Paragraphs — runs of text separated by a blank line.
